How To Deal With Foot Swelling Pain
Common injuries to the foot are those that involve the ankle area or swelling due to other pressures in the foot. This swelling can become very painful to the people are suffering with it. Finding out what causes the swelling in the beginning will help you alleviate the pain from the foot swelling.
Foot swelling pain is a discomfort that is caused by many different things. Pinpointing the cause can be easily done with a quick observation or might require some medical intervention in a check up or physical examination.
Footwear
The shoes you have on your feet right now can be the cause of foot swelling pain. Shoes that are too tight will restrict blood flow to and from the foot area. This then causes either blood to be trapped in the foot, causing pressure and swelling, or for a restriction of blood into the foot. This can cause weakness and swelling.
Take a look at the way your shoes are formed around your foot. Are they too tight? Do they rub on certain areas of your foot? Toe? Ankle? Does it take a lot of effort to take your shoes off because of swelling or tightness? Sometimes just simply having your shoes fitted properly can help with any foot swelling pain caused by your footwear.
Pregnancy
Many pregnant women suffer from foot swelling pain due to the increased pressure they place on their feet because of the weight of the baby. Also there is a loss of balance that is taken up by the foot to compensate for the balance. This places the foot at sometimes odd postures. Over-pronation is another form of swelling that is caused by pregnancy. Often referred to as 'flat feet', this happens because of the added weight and can cause the feet to turn inward.
Edema is also a results of foot swelling pain caused by pregnancy. Edema is the results of extra blood caused by the pregnancy and the pressure that the baby is putting on the uterus and pelvis area. This creates a slowing down of the flood flow to the feet, which causes a swelling of the legs and foot area.
Sprain
Many times the foot swelling pain is caused by a sprain, or tear in the ligaments. Ankle sprains are notorious for excessive swelling and are generally very painful. This pressure, and build up of fluids around the affected area causes the skin to swell with great discomfort. The best remedy is to rest the foot and apply ice as quickly as possible to stop the buildup of fluids around the joint. Swelling resulting from a sprain can last for a few days.
Diabetes
In rare cases, people with diabetes can have complications in their feet. These complications can cause severe foot swelling pain and is often only treated by a physician, or in extreme cases, with surgery to alleviate the pressure. Always consult a doctor if you have diabetes and your feet begin to swell.
